Marquette Park & The Geese

Right across from Holy Cross Hospital, Marquette Park is the largest in the city, with two lagoons. Tough place now, gangs and all. Years back, there was a building on 71st that housed the Nazi party, and they were righteously mocked in the film BLUES BROTHERS, and the scene was filmed right there, by one of the lagoons. That big goose in the second photo? I talked to him for quite awhile. The added bonus of talking to the geese is that the gang members leave you alone.

I guess talking to the goose makes you a member of the gander gang.

I always wondered about Illinois and the American Nazis:

Why Illinois?

Not so much Illinois as Chicago and the climate of hatred fomented by "redlining" neighborhoods and pitting rachial/ethnic groups against each other. The Nazis must have thought they'd found the Promised Land. But they overplayed their hand, as fanatic groups are wont to do. Along with the negative press derived from their proposed Skokie march, their leader, Frank Collin, got busted for cruising for young boys on Broadway and Diversey, which doesn't help your case when you're also spouting anti-gay hate speech. And Wayne, you pointed out once before that Marquette Park was a Lithuanian neighborhood. It took a while, but more Lithuanians started to remember how the Nazis treated them back in the home country.

It was a crazy, tense, scary time. I was looking at some documentary footage from that time a few months ago, in regard to a story I was working on. That footage is still scary.

Hell, that 2nd goose looks like the leader of his gang (or is that gaggle?) He's all like, "What you lookin' at, punk?" *L*
