Tying Up Loose Ends, Dead Man's Pockets

Going back a week, when my computer dissolved under the omega beams of stewart sternberg's eyeballs, I had tried to post the bit about what might be found in my wallet, along with the note about the poor Mr. Curry. Kate S. mentioned the mugging and I thought I'd add the photo, which I took from my old blog. Sad to say, I've been mugged five times over the decades, but twice the pazst two summers. In this photo, blessedly grayscaled for youir viewing pleasure, all the blood is from this idiot high on weed punching my eye with a ring on his hand. The cops who responded to a passing car's cell call were kind enough to take a cell pic for me, as I cheerfully explained that I was a horror writer and this visual might help me in a story one day. I just have a tiny scar in my right eyebrow; its my 37th scar. All the body modifications I have are purely by accident. The second mugging, last July, was worse. In a popuring rainstorm, I decided I would fight back that time. Dr. Frankenstein always rebuilt his Monster, I don't need the assistance from the old man anymore. But that event brought the scar count up to an even 40. On that cheery note, have a great weekend.

Wayne, it's time to stop being mugged. You might consider moving to Detroit. In Detroit they don't mug crazy people. Wait. On the other hand, they do shoot them, so you are better off staying in Chicago.

Seriously, it must have a profound effect upon you. I remember in Detroit one night cooling off in a tub of cold water (we had no airconditioning) and listening to heliocopters, boom boxes, sirens, and the sound of automatic gunfire. As I lay there, squeezing cool water on my face from a washcloth, it occured to me that I shouldn't be hearing these sounds and thinking them normal.

When you walk down the street, Wayne you must constantly be watching faces, listening to sounds, considering safety factors and watching for points of danger and points of escape. It's what I used to do in Detroit. It's what everyone does who lives in a big city where violence is a regular occurence.

We get numbed

On a less serious note, a word about omega beams...

One of these days, you're going to dream about me Wayne. You'll roll over, gurgling contentedly in your sleep, thinking about how nice it would be to be sucking down a tequila sunrise on a beach somewhere in Tahiti when I'll come through the static. I might present myself in feminine form, lulling you into dropping defenses, but when you feel the bumps and curves where no bumps or curves should be, you'll wake up screaming....

all that being said...

Thx for the scary thought, Stewart. (Saying it like Newman on Seinfeld). I was in the wrong place at the wrong time, long story, bus only took me so far and dropped me off 4 miles off from my 'hood. As you know from Detroit, a viaduct makes all the difference. I learned one thing, look at everyone on the street. Two kinds of people do that: cops and psychos. No one will bother you. It was dumb luck that the guy kept punching me not knowing my right side doesn't register pain the way most everyone else does, it takes awhile to process. I ended up not getting my wallet taken, but the two potheads grabbed my copy of AVENGERS#500 when they heard the approaching sirens. I still ask, why do the cops put on the sirens if they want to actually catch the bad guys??? I do hope we get to meet one day, Stewart, not in your feminine form, I'm thinking more like wearing jackets with patches on the sleeves and latex gimp masks and matching Underoos. Then we could drive to Mike Fountain or Kate Sterling's house. And our army will continue to grow....the Sternberg Dynasty of Extreme Terrors!!!

Stewart's thought is scarier than the bloody photo, I must say.O.K., so it's not QUITE as scary as the photo. Actually...stewart's thought is not scary to me at all, whereas the photo, even knowing that it's not as bad as it looks, is fairly awful :).

Um, yeah. I'm with Stewart on this one - no more muggings.

If only it were that simple.

Wayne, that's horrible. Though I do wonder what the cops' reactions were when you asked for a picture.

Your armies can pitch tents or hide in the barn at my place anytime. Viva La Resistance!

Never been mugged. Almost got mugged in NYC near Columbus Square, but one of the pair was wearing black pants with white polka-dots (I shit you not), and as I kept seeing this pattern creeping closer in my peripheral vision, I realized they were stalking me.

When I foiled them and hauled ass as one was coming from behind the big statue (the one with the circular base in front of Central Park), and the other from the opposite side, the look of frustration on their faces was quite amusing.

I saw a huge crowd across the street, and thinking it was probably a street performer and his audience I headed over there. Only to see the end of a cat fight between two young female prostitutes, the pair of them bloody and cut to ribbons from the straight razors they'd been using on one another. One was still standing and the other was slumped against the wall of the building before which the battle had taken place.

No cops. I continued running down the street and ducked into a restaurant.

I stayed inside my hotel the rest of my trip (I was there to sell comic books at a show).

I feel lucky that I've never been mugged, even though I've spent quite a bit of time walking at night and I work in a University surrounded by a relatively high crime area. Several of my friends have been mugged but I've escaped it.

I have never been mugged either, but that photo is kick ass! I am so glad you reposted so I could get a look. I love that it's in black and white, although I bet the color photo is even better. Sorry that you got mugged, but I am glad you got a kick ass pic from it.

Violence is everywhere. I've been around Chicago with Wayne and New Orleans with Charles and come out OK. Maybe I need to go to Detroit and walk around with Stewart and see what happens.

Damn Wayne! That's just not right. Maybe it's time to start thinking about carrying a concealed weapon? If I got mugged 5 times I don't think I'd care about whether it was legal or not.

That is a LOT of times for one guy to get mugged. May I suggest NOT wearing a t-shirt that says "I'm RICH, bitch!" in huge letters? I think that may be your problem.
