Hollywood Kryptonite

Back when I was working those 12-16 hour overnight shifts at the plant, I discovered many cool things to keep me occupied, as I'd need to stay near my machine to keep it at full production, I'd pretty much just stand and read from the ubernet. I discovered that the L.A.Times was running a blog called The Daily Mirror, which reprinted Matt Weinstock articles from exactly fifty years ago. I started reading the archives off and on in April of "1957," and I am keeping my fingers crossed that the paper doesn't fold (as expected) before my 50th birthday in September. Here's what was posted tonight, though, to be honest, I want to know way more about that headline on the bottom, SID ZIFF LOSES. There's more to that one.

Holy crap! I was just thinking about this story this morning. I had a vauge memory that something bad had happened to that first TV superman, but couldn't remember what.

thanks for reading my mind and filling the gaps.

Aside from the story about how eating tacos can protect you from nuclear fallout, what catches the attention of an old newspaper guy like me is the sloppiness of the layout and composition. The "hot type" days are often described as a kind of golden age and this serves to remind us that newspaper people did the best they could with their limited technology but, boy, we can come up with a cleaner, easier-to-read product these days with the technology we've got. Not that we DO, but we COULD.

Oh yeah, and there are still plenty of unanswered questions about that George Reeves death. I love how quickly the reporter conceded to the "Hollywood Jungle" comments. IIRC the Mirror was in a league with the Chicago American, which loved to spice up its front page with some sensational photos.

That movie "Hollywoodland", about Reeves, is pretty good in spite of starring Ben Affleck.

Yep, 9/9/9, it's looming. :o)
