Once More, Karl Edward Wagner

Rest in peace, old friend. Who'd have thought that I'd be older than you one day...? Wayne

I miss him too, Wayne. I wrote a story for him..."When Words Collide," and it was reprinted this fall online, but when I went to get the link, I found it wasn't there. It may be archived...not sure.

You know, I wrote one for you once too...it's titled "Wayne's World," and I wrote it after I shattered my elbow in France -- they said it was bruised and gave me big Motrin pills and a water bottle...

Hey, David. I have a HUGE volume of all things concerning JW Gacy, my research for the DEATHREALM article, his letters to me, etc., all comb-bound. Your story is included in that volume, as there are references to Gacy in the story. I remember having to ask you to mail me the story, circa summer of 1994, because I was still three years away from email.

Yep, that's the one. It was about a man standing outside the gates while Gacy was being killed. The guy believed that, in that instant when Gacy died, he could step in and BECOME Gacy...he'd already recreated the house, the job, learned to be a clown...I had fun with that story.

The one for Karl I started the night I found out he was gone...I didn't finish until years later when I was asked to do something for SHIVERS for Rich Chizmar...of course, they got the title wrong.

I knew Karl as well, although I only met him once. I did correspond with him on occassion. A wonderful friend and with such a talent for writing. I have an article about him supposed to come out sometime next year in a book about his work.

Now that is an awesome picture. I remember when Karl bought "Feeding the Masses" for YB#21 -- his acceptance to me was a note that read "I'll buy this story if only you'll stop sending me this itty bitty pieces of paper." or something to that effect. I'd been trying for years to use up old thank-you notes. Save a tree and all that. ::grin::

Von, that was the year that you, Jeff, Andrew, and I all were in YBH. We had that big table at STARS OUR DESTINATION. At least he accepted your story with only a witty comment; in my case, he'd send checks I couldn't cash because he signed them Buddy Holly or Johnny Cash. Of course, I'd get the real thing a day or two later. I actually have his blood in a signed book, after he cut his thumb on a beer bottle, which he mailed to me. Wonder if we could clone the guy...?

He mailed you the beer bottle? (lol)

And you are one to talk about mailing oddities!

I was usually afraid (back in the day) to open packages from you in company -- just in case.
